Jonas Bronck from Sävsjö, Småland/Sweden isthe man who has given his name to The Bronx. The Jonas Bronck Center has been established around this fact. Jonas Bronck was born in 1600 and as a young man, he first emigrated to Amsterdam. In 1638 he married a Dutch woman and in 1639 he and his wife emigrated to America. He bought a piece of land, which later became The Bronx.
The story behind Jonas Bronck will serve a model and be the power behind Jonas Bronck Center’s goal – to make the cultural and historical treasure in Småland and Sävsjö, the focal point of tourism and relations between The Bronx and this part of Sweden.
Furthermore Jonas Bronck Center is working with historical research, documentation, digitizing of historical material, education and genealogical research.
Between August 22-24, 2014 Jonas Bronck Center will celebrate that it has been 375 years since Jonas Bronck arrived in America.
